  • Week#2 in Frosty Mornings, Warm Connections: Discovering the Black College Experience, Part I

As the newly appointed dean, my second week began amidst an Arctic storm, starkly contrasting to my Louisiana roots, where anything below 70 degrees is considered cold. The storm caused schools and businesses to start late, reminding me of last week’s surprise when I arrived early only to find a two-hour delay.

Despite the chill, stepping onto the campus filled me with warmth. I decided to brave the cold for a walk to the campus cafe, a place buzzing with the unique energy only found at a black college, a testament to the magic of our culture.

On my way, I was greeted enthusiastically by Oscar, a student from California. His sprint across the campus to give me a high-five was a heartwarming welcome. We laughed as I recounted my junior high band days at Eden Garden Junior High (Shreveport), where I was promised the trombone but ended up with the tuba.

The cashier’s warm welcome in the cafe added to the day’s charm. After pondering over the menu, I chose a traditional breakfast. It was then that I met Michael T. from the Bahamas. He was excited to meet his new dean. His kindness and respect toward me, a strange new dean, humbled me. Michael provided me with some grits, which is a fan favorite of mine, for breakfast. Can you really be Southern without loving a hot bowl of grits? My Louisiana conscious would say ‘No!’

The day’s highlight was a visit from Ms. Carter, a business and honors student from New Orleans. Her accent immediately revealed our shared Louisiana heritage, and we chatted with the ease and familiarity unique to those from the same region.

As a black college graduate and now a dean, I realize that my role is not just administrative but cultural. I understand the role of fostering an environment where the black experience is respected and celebrated. Through my interactions on campus, I hope to inspire and nurture the next generation of culturally intelligent leaders who will carry forward the legacy of our rich and diverse black heritage. It was a good week!

  • Charting a Path Through Disruption: Dr. Green’s Nehemiah-Inspired Leadership Model

Dr. Green reflects on the sacrifices of his ancestors as he visited Africa for the first time in 2018.

In the pages of Nehemiah 1:4, we glimpse into the heart of a man named Nehemiah, a beacon of inspiration for us all. “When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days, I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven,” he said, burdened by the suffering of his homeland.

As a child, I, too, heard of Nehemiah’s tale in Sunday School, but under the guidance of Dr. David Houghton, my mentor and dean at OBU, I uncovered a new layer of wisdom within this ancient story. Nehemiah, the cupbearer, wasn’t just a historical figure; he embodied the essence of service. Dr. Houghton’s lecture etched a profound mark on my soul, symbolized by a coin that graces my desk as the business school dean.

In today’s world, I find myself grieving for millions of children and communities in despair. Nehemiah’s narrative serves as our lodestar, offering guidance on navigating the tumultuous seas of leadership in this disruptive age. His story, nestled within the Old Testament, radiates with qualities we cherish: leadership, unwavering determination, and unshakable faith. He stood as the trusted cupbearer to King Artaxerxes in the mighty Persian Empire.

I am thrilled to unveil the “Nehemiah Strategy” – a blueprint for contemporary leaders to confront and conquer disruptions. This strategy, born from profound research, is my compass in this uncharted terrain. It revolves around three pillars:

1️⃣ Watch Leaders, like vigilant sentinels, must scan the horizon for challenges and opportunities.

2️⃣ Fight: In the face of adversity, leaders must summon the courage to confront it head-on, mirroring Nehemiah’s resilience.

3️⃣ Build: As Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls, leaders must diligently construct and fortify their organizations.

My doctoral journey at Regent University unveiled the power of duality, a concept in harmony with the Nehemiah Strategy.

While some may balk at its biblical and historical origins, I invite you to join me on this transformational odyssey. Together, we’ll navigate the turbulent waters of modern leadership, drawing strength from Nehemiah’s legacy.

Stay tuned for further insights as we embark on this empowering quest. Let us, as leaders, rise to meet the challenges of our time! ????

  • Redefining the Future: A Personal Journey Towards Transforming Higher Education in 2024

Do you ever wonder what the future holds in 2024? Do you know what lies ahead for students in higher education? Have you ever questioned how the educational system can better serve their goals and ambitions? In this journey, students are at the forefront, and their experiences and aspirations should guide our efforts to transform higher education.

In 2016, at 50 years old, I made a life-altering decision. I chose to retire from my secure federal manager position to embark on a new journey in academia. This choice undoubtedly left my family and friends bewildered, for I was leaving behind a lucrative job with substantial benefits and the camaraderie of co-workers. My life was deeply intertwined with a network of close friends and acquaintances. Moreover, my dear wife Estraletta had to make significant sacrifices to support this transition. Accepting a faculty position meant taking a 30% pay cut and starting from scratch on the faculty ladder in an entirely new field.

Fast forward seven years, and I find myself standing at the helm of Langston University as the new Business School Dean. Although Langston University and Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) are distinct institutions, they share a joint commitment to academic excellence. Like Nehemiah in the biblical narrative, I feel a profound sense of urgency regarding higher education. The current education system in Oklahoma has failed countless students, and we must bring about change.

In today’s world, education must evolve to provide students with tailored and engaging experiences. While political divisions run deep, one point of consensus between Republicans and Democrats is the need for reform in higher education. A 2018 Pew Research Center survey revealed that a significant majority of Americans (61%) believe that the higher education system in the United States is headed in the wrong direction. The pandemic didn’t create these issues but exacerbated pre-existing challenges. Today’s Generation Z students are unique in their needs, requiring more coaching and feedback. They are digital natives, yet they sit in lectures that have remained stagnant for a decade. It’s time to shift from a subject-centered approach to a student-centered one.

In 2016, Dr. Green left his management position to pursue academics where he could assist the next generations of leaders. Dr. Green poses with the first engineering class at his university.

Higher education must become responsive to the diverse needs of all students. Alarming statistics in Oklahoma County reveal that 35% of children struggle with math proficiency, while in 2013, only 9% of black 8th graders were proficient in math. In Northeast Oklahoma City, 62% of black 3rd graders failed reading tests. The status quo is untenable. To address these challenges, we must innovate, incorporating advanced methods such as AI tools and engaging students actively in their learning journey. At OBU, we pioneered innovative teaching in the Dickinson School of Business. We transformed theoretical concepts into practical applications, helping students see the direct relevance of their courses to their future careers. Initiatives like the OBU Micro Internship Program connected students with real-world projects and organizations, resulting in over 3,000 consulting hours donated to more than a hundred organizations across the globe.

The future holds immense potential. Oklahoma’s students, who have faced setbacks during the pandemic, deserve a higher education system that survives and thrives. Instead of following outdated playbooks, universities and colleges should adapt to the needs of today’s digital generation. By doing so, we can forge a brighter future for all Oklahoma students, irrespective of their age, gender, nationality, or social status.

Today, I urge you to embark on your journey toward a purposeful and fulfilling life. It’s never too late to seek meaning and make a difference. Join us in reshaping the landscape of higher education and ensuring a better future for future generations. Let’s pray it is not too late.

  • Embracing Hope: My Journey as Dean of Langston Business School

I am Dr. Daryl D. Green, and I am thrilled to share my journey as the new Dean of Langston Business School. This role represents a career move and a profound commitment to shaping the future and providing Hope.

My path to this prestigious position has been marked by dedication, perseverance, and a burning desire to make a difference. Leaving a successful tenure at an elite Oklahoma university was a tough decision, but it was a call I couldn’t ignore. Langston University’s significance in Oklahoma, as the only historically black college in the state, drew me in, and its rich history echoed deeply.

My journey began at Southern University A&M, where I was surrounded by brilliant Black minds, instilling in me the expectation of excellence. After a rewarding 27-year career as a senior engineering manager, I transitioned into academia with a profound sense of responsibility to give back.

As I assume the role of Dean, I am committed to serving not just as an administrator but as a beacon of Hope. Our mission is clear: to empower our students, especially those in underserved communities, to rise above challenges and reach their full potential. We are not just educators but mentors, role models, and builders of dreams.

Langston Business School has a unique niche; I am here to help it shine brighter. Together, we will innovate, bridge gaps, and uplift our students; they are our hope for a better future.

I believe in the power of Hope in a world that sometimes seems uncertain. It’s not just a word; it’s a force that drives us to create a brighter tomorrow. Let’s build a legacy of excellence and hope at Langston Business School.

    With gratitude and inspiration,

    Dr. Daryl D. Green

  • Charting New Horizons with Dean Daryl Green: The Bayou Classic Experience

Visiting Southern University – A Journey of Pride and Legacy

As a proud Southern University graduate, returning to our alma mater was a journey filled with nostalgia and pride. In November 2023, my wife Estraletta and I embarked on this memorable trip with Dr. Rev. Lawrence Kirk and his wife Beverly, fulfilling a bucket list dream for them. Estraletta and I bleed Southern University’s colors, having graduated in 1989 in Civil and Mechanical Engineering, respectively.

Our journey began with a heartwarming stop in my hometown, Shreveport, where we met the Kirks. From there, we traveled to Southern University, which holds our cherished memories and symbolizes a significant step in elevating our family legacy. Our visit included a grand campus tour, where the university’s spirit was profound in every corner. Many stop at Tony’s Seafood and Market. It is a cafeteria style restaurant, with my sitting.  Had our lunch in the grocery store parking lot. It shocked the Kirks.  But—that’s part of the Louisiana magic!

A highlight was visiting the bookstore, where I reunited with my former classmate, Howard White. Once a fellow mechanical engineering student, Howard became a successful entrepreneur; He is the owner of Top Choice near Southern University. We reminisced about our student days and discussed the book we co-authored, a testament to the enduring bonds formed at Southern.

This trip was more than a walk down memory lane; it reaffirmed the pride and sense of accomplishment that Southern University instills in its graduates. It was a reminder of how our black college experience has been instrumental in shaping not just our careers but our very identities.

Entrepreneur Howard White and Dr. Green are Southern in Mechanical Engineering Classmates. They wrote a book together dealing with good fathers.

The 50th Bayou Classic – A Triumph of Spirit and Victory

The Bayou Classic, a beacon of black college excellence, unfolded its 50th chapter in a spectacular display of talent, culture, and spirited competition. This annual college football classic, a storied rivalry between Grambling State University Tigers and Southern University Jaguars, has been a highlight since its inception in 1974, continuing a tradition that began in 1932. Held in the vibrant city of New Orleans, the Bayou Classic is more than a game; it’s a cultural festival celebrating the black community’s heritage, talent, and spirit.

In 2023, the Bayou Classic was a celebration and a triumphant moment for Southern University. Our Jaguars won the Battle of the Bands on Friday, a testament to our musicians’ unmatched talent and energy. The band’s performance was a mesmerizing blend of music, choreography, and sheer charisma, winning the hearts of everyone present.

The pinnacle of excitement came with the November 25, 2023 football game. In an exhilarating match that kept everyone on the edge of their seats, Southern University emerged victorious with a score of 27-22 against Grambling State. The game, broadcast nationally on NBC, was a thriller showcasing our players’ athleticism, strategy, and heart. Winning the Battle of the Bands and the football game was a proud moment for all Southern University associates.

The Bayou Classic embodies the pride and unity within the black community. It’s not just about the rivalry; it’s about coming together to celebrate our achievements, culture, and enduring spirit. The event symbolizes a legacy of excellence, where the trophy awarded to the winning school represents much more than a victory in sports – it tells the triumph of our community’s spirit and the enduring legacy of our institutions.

As the dean of Langston University, I see the Bayou Classic as an inspiring beacon for all aspiring students and a proud example of the richness of the black college experience. Sharing this story of triumph and unity, I hope to inspire future generations to partake in and contribute to this magnificent tradition. The Bayou Classic is a testament to our community’s strength, talent, and unwavering pride. Let’s continue to celebrate and uplift this extraordinary legacy!

  • The Nehemiah Strategy for Today’s Leaders:  How to Navigate a World in Disruptive and Chaos

Palestinians evacuate following an Israeli airstrike on the Sousi Mosque in Gaza on Oct. 9. MAHMUD HAMS/AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES

I drove by the school every day on my way to OBU. The academic institution was a staple in the Shawnee community. I am sure no one in the area would anticipate it was close. St. Gregory’s University closed its operations at the end of the fall semester in 2017. The university is a private liberal arts institution founded in 1875 and is Oklahoma’s only Roman Catholic university. At the time of closure, it was established that the student enrollment was 580, 10% being Native American. The Benedictine monks founded the university to educate Native Americans and the settlers from the eastern United States who were moving to Oklahoma. This news shocked students and faculty, leaving them in disbelief. The primary reason for the closure was financial difficulties. I pondered how many colleges and universities were in the same situation—a failure not to understand the market or environmental trends.

Are you prepared for a disruptive future or sitting idly by, praying that nothing happens? Welcome to the New Normal. Leaders brag about their seasoned experience. Yet, it is this seasoned experience that leaves organizations in a ditch. What is disruption? What is chaos? Those unplanned events break the traditional normal of an organization. Disruption is across the world. Individuals don’t need to look far for disruption in today’s world. The 2023 Israel-Hamas war began when Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, launched an unprecedented assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, with hundreds of gunmen infiltrating Israeli territory. In response to the attacks, Israel’s cabinet formally declared war on Hamas, and Israel initiated efforts to recover hostages and began an aerial campaign. While military solutions may be the answer quickly, there are always unintended consequences. These leaders operate on vast work experience. They fall into the same repetitive traps as previous executive teams. Is there a better way to lead under chaos? As I accept the new dean role at Langston University, I am deepening my application of the Nehemiah Strategy. Like most new managers, I navigate uncharted waters, learning the organization’s culture. This article explores how today’s leaders can utilize the Nehemiah Strategy to overcome the disruptive barriers in the market.

Dr. Green works with students at the university to navigate disruption in the workplace.

If we are honest with ourselves, we do not like disruption or chaos. Yet, today’s organizations must deal with an uncertain future. Disruption is often destructive to traditional institutions. While incremental change is slow and predictable, disruptive change is not; it is often sudden, unpredictable, and uncertain. The risk is high. The stakes are enormous. That is when traditional managers falter. Market forces are unforgiving. For example, nearly 9 of every 10 Fortune 500 companies in 1955 were gone, merged, or contracted by 2017. Think about this. These companies were in the Fortune 500 in 1955 but not in 2017: American Motors, Brown Shoe, Studebaker, Collins Radio, Detroit Steel, Zenith Electronics, and National Sugar Refining. Apple Founder Steve Jobs argued, “You have to be burning with an idea, problem, or a wrong that you want to right. You’ll never stick it out if you’re not passionate enough from the start.” Thus, there is a need to formulate a better disruption solution.

Enter Nehemiah. The story of Nehemiah is an excellent foundation for understanding how to lead in a disruptive world. Nehemiah’s story is one of leadership, determination, and faith, found in the Old Testament. He served as a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes in the Persian Empire, a position of trust and influence. One day, Nehemiah received distressing news about the state of Jerusalem, his homeland. The city’s walls were in ruins, leaving the people vulnerable to danger and suffering. The plight of his fellow Israelites deeply moved Nehemiah’s heart, and he felt a calling to take action. He approached the king, requesting permission to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the city’s walls. Rebuilding the wall was a significant decision because leaving his role as cupbearer could have serious consequences. King Artaxerxes granted Nehemiah’s request and even provided resources for the project. Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem and faced numerous challenges, including opposition from neighboring rulers and internal discord among the Israelites. Nehemiah’s leadership style was marked by prayer, planning, perseverance, and a deep reliance on God. He inspired the people to work together tirelessly, and despite the obstacles, they successfully rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem in just 52 days. Nehemiah’s story highlights the power of purpose-driven leadership, the importance of compassion for one’s community, and the role of faith in overcoming adversity. It is a timeless example of how a leader’s dedication and vision can transform a society and bring about positive change.

From the foundation of Nehemiah, we can formulate a better disruption solution. The Nehemiah Strategy is a robust framework for leadership that draws inspiration from the biblical story of Nehemiah. It encapsulates essential principles that can guide leaders in navigating disruptive environments and achieving meaningful change. The following are fundamental principles for Nehemiah’s strategy: (1) Passion for Your Purpose: Nehemiah’s unwavering passion for the cause of rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls serves as a reminder that a deep sense of purpose must drive leaders. Love fuels determination and resilience in the face of challenges. (2) Preparation: Just as Nehemiah counted the project’s cost, leaders should embrace meticulous planning and preparation. This ‘counting the cost’ process aligns with the biblical principle of wisdom, advocated by Jesus Christ, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for the journey ahead. (3) Assess the Problem: Before taking action, leaders must thoroughly understand the problem they aim to solve. Nehemiah’s careful assessment of Jerusalem’s situation highlights the need for a precise diagnosis of challenges. (4) Involve Others in the Assessment: Effective leaders engage their team and stakeholders in the assessment process. Collaboration fosters diverse perspectives and solutions, as seen when Nehemiah involved the community in the assessment. (5) Be Honest About the Situation: Transparency is crucial. Leaders must openly acknowledge challenges and limitations, just as Nehemiah truthfully assessed Jerusalem’s condition. (6) Anticipate Opposition: Nehemiah faced opposition from various quarters, teaching us that leaders seeking positive change encounter resistance. Leaders must anticipate this and develop strategies to overcome it.

In the Nehemiah Strategy, leaders operate in duality, balancing multiple aspects simultaneously:

    (a) Watch: Leaders must conduct thorough environmental scanning, staying attuned to market trends and shifts.

    (b) Fight: This entails confronting competition assertively, protecting their brand reputation, and addressing negative feedback.

    (c) Build: Leaders should focus on creating innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of their constituents.

Leaders must rethink their approach in a world marked by disruptive forces and constant change. The seasoned experience of yesterday may not be enough to navigate the challenges of tomorrow. As we embrace the New Normal, we must recognize that disruption and chaos are not aberrations but constants in today’s landscape. Hope for stability is no longer sufficient; we must actively seek strategies to thrive amidst uncertainty. The Nehemiah Strategy offers a beacon of hope, a leadership blueprint that combines wisdom and adaptability. Like a ship in uncharted waters, leaders must become the master communicators of their vision, guiding their teams through the storm. As I embark on my new role as dean at Langston University, I am committed to applying the Nehemiah Strategy. I urge all leaders to do the same – to embrace change, cultivate resilience, and lead with unwavering determination. Pray that it is not too late.

  • Navigating Turbulent Waters: How Strategic Leaders Tackled Disruption in 2023

Navigating Turbulent Waters: How Strategic Leaders Tackled Disruption in 2023

    Summary:
This article explores the dynamic business landscape of 2023 and offers valuable guidance for strategic leaders on how to navigate disruptive changes. Dr. Green shares insights from his extensive experience working with contemporary businesses, churches, nonprofit organizations, and academic institutions, helping them thrive in an ever-changing world.

In the dynamic world of 2024, change is not just inevitable; it’s constant. Symbolic of many executives today, John Bust has been thrust into a rapidly evolving technology sector. Fierce competition has transformed yesterday’s rivals into tomorrow’s strategic allies. Meanwhile, global pressures from underdeveloped nations continue to drive down costs, leaving employees disgruntled over increasing workloads with no pay hikes. John yearns for a magic solution, but the world needs strategic leaders.

The Need for Change in 2023:
The question arises: Are organizations prepared for the upcoming changes in 2024? Disruptive changes continue to plague the world. In early October, war broke out between Israel and Hamas, a militant group that controls parts of Palestine. Meanwhile, it has been a year and a half since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine; both sides have dug in, making the end of the war less likely in the near future. The speakership position in the United States is currently vacant. The former speaker, Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, was forced out of this role by his party.

Welcome to the New Normal for organizations. The challenges of today demand a new approach. Companies are engaged in a constant battle for survival amidst economic uncertainties. Shareholders replace CEOs with the ease of changing a lightbulb. It’s frequent and unpredictable. While executives often opt for quick fixes, such as cost-cutting and technology integration, can today’s managers continue with business as usual and expect different outcomes? The answer is a resounding ‘no.’ This article examines how strategic leaders can navigate disruptive change in 2023.

The Pitfall of Relying on Experience:
Unfortunately, some managers still cling to their past experiences to navigate today’s markets. However, the market of today is unlike the past. It’s characterized by disruptive changes that occur suddenly and unpredictably. In this environment, experience can become a liability rather than an asset. Organizations sticking to traditional operations find themselves vulnerable. Established institutions falter, while unknown companies emerge to dominate new sectors. As Clayton Christensen noted, disruptive innovation is the driving force. Survival hinges on grasping current market dynamics and future trends.

    The Role of Strategic Leaders:
In 2023, most organizations require strategic leaders to guide them through disruptive changes. Strategic thinking offers a fresh perspective for contemporary managers. It encompasses two critical elements: a deep understanding of the present and a visionary outlook for the future. As Charles Handy aptly puts it, “Discontinuous change requires discontinuous thinking.” To adapt to the new, organizations must reevaluate everything. Leaders like Watt Wacker, Jim Taylor, and Howard Means advocate for a dual role – living in the present while anticipating the future. Strategic leaders possess a distinct mindset characterized by several traits, including focusing on vital issues, selecting relevant information, recognizing systematic patterns, and acting decisively during crises.

    Conclusion
Will things return to normal in 2023, given the disruptive changes across the globe? What qualities will define leaders capable of navigating this uncertain future? In essence, duality becomes the cornerstone of exemplary leadership in disruptive environments. To sum up, disruptive change continues to pose challenges for traditional organizations. This article has explored how strategic leaders can effectively confront disruption in the 2023 marketplace. Strategic thinking stands out as a distinct approach, and managers must recognize its importance. As traditional methods are rendered obsolete by the disruptive environment, managers must reevaluate their strategies, whilst leaders need to exhibit adaptability in the face of sudden market shifts. Forward-thinking organizations transcend detailed planning and embrace strategic thinking to secure their future in 2024.
