Immersing in Langston Culture: My First Lion Camp Experience

The week, before school starts, is always crazy, filled with finalizing class schedules and onboarding new adjunct professors. The hot Oklahoma weather doesn’t help either. Amidst this chaos, I heard about Lion Camp last semester but haven’t fully grasped its meaning or purpose until now.

This week, I had my first opportunity to participate in Lion Camp, where the first-year class is immersed in Langston culture and academically prepared before the school year begins. This orientation helps students get acquainted with the campus and the upper-level students, known as Ambassadors, who guide them through tours and provide invaluable advice.

During Lion Camp, I had the chance to interact with students and their parents, sharing the value of Langston University with them. I assisted in locating buildings and personnel, ensuring that everyone felt welcomed and supported. It was a pleasure to see one of my business students, Kathlyn Scott, working as an Ambassador, helping high school graduates navigate their future at Langston.

As part of the program, I presented at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. I aimed to keep the energy up each time and conducted an icebreaker to engage the students. I believe I spoke to about 300-500 students that day. I shared my college stories, explaining that I did not have any meaningful relationships with my professors at Southern University, a regret I carry with me. I emphasized the importance of building these connections and how they can significantly impact their academic journey.

Lion Camp was a great experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with our new students and help them embark on their Langston journey.

I look forward to meeting each of them again during Donuts with the Dean of the business school this Fall. Here’s to a successful start to the school year!
